Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen,GCON

Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen , GCON (born December 22, 1950) is the first Southerner to be the Chief Justice of Nigeria in 30 years since Justice Ayo Gabriel Irikefe ((March 3, 1922 — August 1, 1996), an Itshekiri from Warri, Delta State, retired in 1987 at the statutory retirement age of 65.


He attended the Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos between 1977 and 1978 for his B.L certificate.
Onnoghen was at Accra Academy, Accra Ghana between 1972 and 1974 for his WAEC (A-Levels) before proceeding to the University of Ghana, Legon, Ghana between 1974 and 1977 to obtain his Bachelor of Law Degree (LL.B (Hons)) and graduated with 2nd Class Upper Division


He has been an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria since 2005, after been nominated by Olusegun Obasahjo.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria is nominated by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria upon recommendation by the National Judicial Council and is subject to confirmation by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The CJN holds office at the pleasure of the Nigerian constitution and can only be removed from office by death or on attainment of age 70 whichever occurs first or by impeachment the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which requires a super majority of the members of the Nigerian Senate.

Therefore, all things being equal, Onnoghen will retire and vacate office on December 22, 2020 when he must have attained the compulsory retirement age of 70.
