PDP flays ex-National Legal Adviser Olusola Oke’s return to APC

14:31 0

Peter Dada, Akure

The Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has lambasted Mr. Olusola Oke for returning to the All Progressives Congress.

Oke, a former National Legal Adviser of the PDP, left the APC after the September 3, 2016 primary of the party, for the Alliance for Democracy on the platform of which he contested the November 20, 2016 governorship election eventually won by incumbent governor, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu.

Oke, who returned to the APC last Thursday, said he took the decision “to assist Governor Akeredolu to develop Ondo State.”

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Director of Publicity of the PDP, Mr. Ayo Fadaka, the opposition party expressed disappointment about Olusola Oke’s latest political move.

In the statement, the PDP noted that Nigerians were tired of the administration of the APC, saying it was wrong for Oke to have returned to the ruling party when it has lost its popularity all over the country.

The statement read in part, “We are disappointed that a politician of Olusola Oke’s status, nurtured in the traditions of political piety while in our party, can continue to immerse himself into this ludicrous APC…

“We wonder how Sola Oke does not know that the nation is only waiting with bated breath for the next day at the ballots, to cast off the yoke of his new party.”

However, Oke’s media aide, Mr. Rotimi Ogunleye, said the PDP was disappointed with Oke’s return to the APC because he refused to return to the PDP after much appeal by its leadership.

He said, “I sympathise with them (PDP) because their frustration flows from the fact that the PDP leaders had persistently mounted pressure on Chief Oke, begging and appealing to him to come and help them revive their dying party in Ondo State.”

LASTMA arrests five traffic officials for extortion

14:18 0

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has arrested five of its traffic officials for extorting motorists last week at various parts of the State.
The traffic officials are Bamidele Sheu, a level seven traffic officer aged 48 and resident of 68, Oke Popo Street, Lagos Island; Ope Adisa, aged 32 and level 5 traffic officer of 8, Freeman Street, Lagos Island and Babatunde Aluko 37 years old traffic officer level 4 of 15, Oriwu street, Ikorodu.
The trio were arrested following a complaint to the Agency by one Akinmolayan Babatunde, a clearing agent for illegal apprehension of his container truck with number AA 553 NGW at Marina area of the Lagos Island and subsequent demand for N80,000 bribe before the vehicle could be released.According to Akinmolayan, he was accompanying the container truck on Monday morning to deliver goods at Walter Carrington Street at Victoria Island, when the truck was forced to stop at Marina close to the State House by the three LASTMA officials in uniform working with some other men in mufti for driving the vehicle at unauthorised hours.
Akinmolayan said all pleas to allow the truck to go in order to meet up with delivery time fell on deaf ears as the traffic officials and these men in mufti engaged him in fisticuffs, and the vehicle was eventually taken to Olowu removal yard of the Agency on the Island, where they demanded for the sum of N80,000 before its release.
It took the intervention of the zonal head and after parting with N7, 000 to some men in mufti that the vehicle was eventually released and allowed to go.
In the same vein, the duo of Jimo Olaosebikan and Emmanuel Padonu were arrested during the week by surveillance unit and provost officials of the Agency at Okokomaiko and Mile 12 areas of the state respectively.
While Olaosebikan was arrested by men of LASTMA surveillance team unit at Okokomaiko along Lagos- Badagry expressway for illegally collecting a sum of N20,000 from a female motorist whom he alleged to have made an illegal u-turn at Okokomaiko.
According to the motorist, “all explanations that other vehicles have been turning there before for failed to convince him and efforts to see his superior officers in their office were frustrated by him, only for him to collect the sum of N20,000 from me before their surveillance team emerged from nowhere to arrest him.”
Padonu, on his part, was picked up by Provost officials for using men in mufti to collect money from commercial drivers at Mile 12 area of Kosofe Local Government of Lagos State on Wednesday morning.
The arrest was as a result of tip-off from members of the public who informed the Agency that some traffic officials were conniving with men in mufti to arrest and collect money from commercial drivers in the area.Speaking on the arrested officials, General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olawale Musa expressed dismay at the activities of unscrupulous elements within the Agency and assured that with the assistance of members of the public they will be eased off from the Agency to protect the good name of the hard working officers who work assiduously to ensure free flow of traffic in the State.
Musa expressed his appreciation to members of the public for alerting the Agency to the unscrupulous activities of these officials, just as he advised motorists to always report any LASTMA official found wanting on duty.
According to him, “LASTMA operates a cashless policy and motorists should not give money to any LASTMA official under any circumstance. Furthermore, LASTMA officials on duty are always in uniforms with names conspicuously displayed on the breast pockets and motorists should disregard anybody not in uniform claiming to be Agency officials.
He said such person in mufti should be reported to LASTMA or nearest law enforcement Agency, adding that any motorist dealing with the state traffic official should feel free to demand for his identity and name.
Musa urged motorists and members of the public to take advantage of the open door policy of the Agency to make complaints against any erring officer, and as such complains would not only be treated with dispatch, but also make sure justice is done.
The LASTMA boss therefore urged motorists to exhaust all avenues available to seek redress before approaching media, as any officer found wanting on duty would be dealt with according to the service rules and regulation.
“I want to assure motorists that we have put everything in place to ensure free flow of traffic during the yuletide period and I want to implore motorists to imbibe the culture of voluntary compliance with traffic officials directives, obey road signs and laws so that we can have seamless traffic during this yuletide period,” Musa said.
It would be recalled that over 20 officials of the Agency have been dismissed this year for various act of misconduct that were considered to be inimical to the service of the state and Agency.
This is in addition to dozens of other officials that have received various letters of warning and those that are waiting their turn to appear before Personal Management Board (discipline) for various unwholesome act and behaviour.

barca reach agreement with griezmann

14:15 0
Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has met with the family of Atletico Madrid’s star forward Antoine Griezmann ahead of a possible summer move, sports daily Mundo Deportivo reported on Sunday.
The French international, who has been Atletico’s top scorer for the past three seasons, has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United in the past.
However, Barca appear willing to meet his 100 million euro ($118 million) buyout clause as they seek to again unite Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez with a prolific attacker following the departure of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain in August for a world record 222 million euros.
“Barca settled on Griezmann as an objective for 2018 and they spoke with his entourage to see if he was willing to wear the blue and red shirt,” reported Barcelona-based Mundo Deportivo.
“After receiving a ‘yes’ in response, an agreement was reached with the French goalscorer involving Pep Segura, Barca’s general manager, and Robert Fernandez, the director of football.
“President Josep Maria Bartomeu has now entered to finalise the operation.” the newspaper reported adding that “Bartomeu met recently with Griezmann’s family to eat in Barcelona.”
Griezmann, 26, agreed to sign a new contract with Atletico in June after the club had an appeal against a transfer ban rejected.
The top scorer at Euro 2016, Griezmann said it would have been “dirty” to walk out on the club when they couldn’t replace him until January.
However, Atletico coach Diego Simeone accepted this week that Griezmann’s departure is inevitable. Many of Atletico’s other outstanding players, including strikers Fernando Torres, Sergio Aguero, Radamel Falcao and Diego Costa, have also left in recent years for pastures new.
“Of course Griezmann will be able to leave at some point, as Diego Costa, Diego Ribas and Arda Turan have gone,” Simeone told French sports daily L’Equipe.
“If a player comes to me and says, ‘coach, I have a chance of a lifetime and want to leave’, and if he’s left everything on the pitch for me like Griezmann, I’ll say, ‘no problem’.”
Atletico are also likely to come under financial pressure to sell after moving into a new 310-million euro stadium in September and falling to make it into the last 16 of the Champions League for the first time in five years.
The club have also already committed to nearly 100 million euros in transfers for January with Costa returning from Chelsea and Spanish international Vitolo joining from Sevilla.

YouTube briefly took down FCC chairman Ajit Pai

13:14 0

Screenshot of video by the Daily Caller
The internet’s most hated man, Ajit Pai, was taken down from YouTube for seven hours after a copyright complaint from the record label Mad Decent. Earlier this week, The Daily Callerposted a video of the FCC chairman dismissing concerns over net neutrality by while dancing around in a Santa suit to “Harlem Shake” and swinging a lightsaber. The flippant tone he took to the hot button issue of net neutrality was unpopular, and as of writing, the video currently stands at 7k likes to 169k dislikes.
Baauer, the DJ who created the track that accompanies the Harlem Shake meme, was “appalled” to be associated in any way with the repeal of net neutrality, and even tweeted that he was going to take action to “stop this loser” (presumably referring to the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission).
In a statement to the Verge on Thursday, Baauer said that he is in support of net neutrality and that his team was “currently exploring every single avenue available to get it taken down.”
According to an op-ed published by The Daily Caller, he succeeded for about seven hours.
Screenshot by the Daily Caller
“Google is quietly and arbitrarily using its massive power to censor the internet,” said the publisher of The Daily Caller, about the brief takedown of their Ajit Pai PSA.
“It took seven crucial hours and the full force of our news site to push Google and YouTube to reverse this political censorship,” he wrote, claiming that they were only able to prevail because of the “sizable contacts and resources” of their organization.
The Daily Caller also claimed that the takedown was wrongful, because the “FCC chairman dancing with a lightsaber to ‘The Harlem Shake,’ is an obvious parody,” and “this is as open-and-shut a case of fair use as has ever existed.”
“It’s a long standing trope of fair use cases, if you’re the one whose content is being taken down, it’s always a clear cut case,” says Tim Hwang, the director of Ethics and Governance at the AI Initiative, a joint project between MIT and Harvard. Hwang is also a lawyer and the organizer of ROFLcon, a convention on internet memes that ran from 2008 to 2012.
In general, the fact that “Harlem Shake” is a meme doesn’t give it any special status in terms of copyright law. Rather than informing any legal analysis, memes just make copyright law more muddy.
“It really highlights the inherent tension with copyright and memes,” says Meredith Rose, an attorney at Public Knowledge who specializes in policy around intellectual property law. “The underlying theory of a meme is that it’s outside a creator’s control by virtue of its own popularity and that it is by definition self-propagating. And that’s really at odds with the concept of copyright.”
Although The Daily Caller calls the video “an obvious parody,” it’s not so clear-cut. Parody is a legal concept established by Supreme Court precedent in Campbell v. Acuff-Rose, a case in which 2 Live Crew was sued for its parody of Roy Orbison’s “Pretty Woman.” But what gets to be a parody is narrower than what a lot of people may think. In Dr. Seuss Enterprises v. Penguin Books, a “a rhyming summary of highlights from the O.J. Simpson double murder trial” in the Dr. Seuss style was not a parody but instead a “satire,” which was not subject to protection under the fair use doctrine. While 2 Live Crew wrote a song similar to “Pretty Woman” to make fun of “Pretty Woman,” the satirical The Cat NOT in the Hat! was using Dr. Seuss’s copyrighted material to make fun of something unrelated, and that didn’t count as parody.
When The Daily Caller was filming Ajit Pai dancing, were they using “Harlem Shake” to make fun of “Harlem Shake”? It’s not entirely clear. Almost everyone else who’s ever joined in on the Harlem Shake meme wouldn’t be able to avail themselves of a parody defense, but on the other hand, maybe you could argue that the internet’s most hated man is poking fun at the very internet itself.
“I don’t want to say that it’s a completely frivolous argument,” says Rose. “But I think it’s a harder argument to make if you’re saying that a video of the FCC chairman doing the Harlem Shake while talking about these other issues is actually making fun of the Harlem Shake. That’s a level of meta that I don’t think Ajit Pai was going for.
When asked if Ajit Pai was being censored, Rose laughed very long and hard.
Public Knowledge vocally opposed the rollback of net neutrality rules spearheaded by Ajit Pai. But at least one other advocacy group that opposed net neutrality sides with Pai on this one.
“I was doing my level best to avoid seeing that video, but now that I have: the video is indeed a classic instance of fair use and not a proper subject of a DMCA takedown whatever the motivation,” says Corynne McSherry, the legal director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which also vehemently opposed Pai’s policy proposals.
“That said, to send a takedown notice for purely political reasons, assuming that is what Baauer did, is even more improper — and sadly all too common. EFF may share Baauer’s concerns about net neutrality, but abusing the DMCA is not the right way to fight for it.”
Whatever the answer is, everyone agrees that the problems that The Daily Caller ran into are well-known and experienced frequently by many others. “It’s framed in such a conspiratorial way, but in many ways it’s a textbook case around how do we deal with memes online,” says Hwang.
“The internet is a very vibrant place, and I think a lot of the memeing and a lot of the nontraditional creativity that goes on is a good thing,” says Rose. “We don’t want to force that into the shadows in any way, but at the same time, the law is what it is, and until we rewrite it and restructure it to take account of things like memes and collaborative creativity and derivative creativity, we’re going to have these situations, which are either a bug or a feature depending on who you ask.”
It’s almost like this policy has had unintended consequences and maybe the best thing would be for the law to step in and buffer consumers from the whims of unfeeling corporations? Anyways, congratulations on getting your video reinstated, Ajit.

SARS brutalizes young man in benin

07:19 0
According to the driver, he said as soon has he stopped, he apologized to the officers and then he said they asked all the passengers to get out of the car and they asked oneof the passengers where he works and also asked him to hand his phone over to them, but he refused.
He was then accused of being a cultist and that was why he didn’t want to hand his phone over.
At this point they tried to force him into another car. He again refused and he was hit with a gun, which led to massive bleeding.Alot of us tried to know what station they were from or geta badge number or name but all to no avail.
I was lucky to have taken this pix and also able to capture at least 2 of the officers while the other one tried as much as he could to avoid those who had phones with them.
A good Samaritan ended up taking the guy for treatment.
