An HND 2 student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, identified as Olagundoye Oladotun was reportedly drowned in a river at Igbekebo, the headquarters of the Ese Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Oladotun, was said to have followed his friend, Gboyega to Igbekebo for his father’s when the incident occurred.
LEADERSHIP learnt that the incident occurred on Thursday August 24, 2017.
The deceased, who was a mathematics student of the RUGIPO, went to the river with Gboyega and some of his other friends to swim but only him died in the river.
The remains of the deceased was said to have been deposited at the Ondo State Government Hospital, Ode Irele.
A source told our correspondent that , ” He (Oladotun) and some of his friends, including Gboyega his host, went to the river but only him put off his clothes and jumped into the river and after some time he could not come up again.”
The source further informed that the corpse of deceased was found by the marine police in the town four days after the incident.
According to him, Gboyega and three other friends had been arrested and detained at the Special Investigative Bureau of the Ondo State Police Command for interrogation.
While confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Mr. Femi Joseph, said the command had commenced investigation on it.
Joseph said, ” The report we have is that the deceased followed his friend to a jetty in the town and he put off his clothes and jumped into into the river. He told his friend that he was a good swimmer. But some hours after he dived into the river, he did not come up. Later his lifeless body floated in the river after four days of searching for him.
” His friends are with us helping, us in our investigation and autopsy would be conduct on the corpse. ”
The PRO however noted that there was no foul play suspected in the death of the polytechnic student in the investigation conducted so far.
