A Yenagoa Magistrates’ Court, Bayelsa State, yesterday sentenced to eight years imprisonment a 40-year-old man, Godbless, for having carnal knowledge of a four-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy.
Godbless was sentenced over a two-count charge of having unlawful carnal knowledge of both victims. The magistrate convicted the suspect after he pleaded guilty to the charges.
The state Chairperson of International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Dise Sheila Ogbise-Erhisere, commended the ruling.
She said: “It is victory for FIDA Bayelsa and a warning signal to paedophiles, child molesters and abusers.” Ogbise-Erhisere, who is also the complainant in the matter, said that she was happy with the speedy dispensation of justice in the case.
She explained that on September 15, she got a distress call from a concerned neighbour, saying that a five-yearold boy had been defiled. The neighbour also disclosed to FIDA that she caught Godbless, having carnal knowledge of her daughter.
