Talking about one of his Historical judicial Case
THE MARIAM MAUDE CASE
- One interesting pro bono case that Chief Gani Fawehinmi handled before he fell ill was the Mariam Maude case.
- This was a very unique case. A peasant lady, Mariam Maude allegedly had a fight with a bourgeois friend, the daughter of the Speaker of Bauchi State House of Assembly.
- Unfortunately, the daughter of the Speaker inadvertently died and Mariam, who was from a very poor background and could not afford legal services, was remanded in the prison for over a year before her plight was brought to the attention of Chief Fawehinmi.
- He took up her defence pro bono and eventually in 2005, got her discharged and acquitted. But immediately she was freed, she was re-arrested based on "orders from above".
- Gani had to call the Inspector-General of police, Sunday Ehindero, to complain over the lady's re-arrest, after which the IG ordered her release.
- But the powers that be in Bauchi were not happy. She was reluctantly released and they planned to attack Gani, his team and the girl.
- It took a special security escort ordered by the Inspector-General of police, to protect Gani from Bauchi to Abuja.
